Amelia Earhart was 40 years old when, with her navigator Fred Noonan, she took off to fly around the world in a twin-engine Lockheed Electra.  She had already been the first woman to cross the Atlantic solo.  Awarded DFC for that achievement, thus joining Charles Lindbergh.  Subsequently the DFC was restricted to military personnel.
     In their around-the-world flight Earhart and Noonan made it from Florida through Africa and Australia before crashing somewhere near Howland Island in the Pacific.  Many theories emerged including a recent one of Japanese recovery of the plane, Earhart, and Noonan.  But that theory has now been thoroughly refuted - they both died.

     With her partner, Captain Noonan, on the second of July
Her plane fell in the ocean, far away.

She radioed position and she said that all was well,
Although the fuel within the tanks was low.
     But they'd land on Howland Island to refuel her monoplane,

Well, a half an hour later an SOS was heard,
The signal weak, but still her voice was brave.
     Oh, in shark-infested waters her plane went down that night
In the blue Pacific to a watery grave.
