Nelson's Farewell
When the Irish celebrated the 50th anniversary of
Easter Week (1916) by blowing off Nelson's column
in Dublin's O'Connell Street, they left the street
to the effigy to the man for whom it was named, and
only few tears were shed.
G
Poor old Adm'ral Nelson is no longer in the air
C D G
Toora, loora, loora, loora, loo
G
On the eighth day of March in Dublin City fair
C D G
Toora, loora, loora, loora, loo
D
From his stand of stones and mortar
D
He fell crashing through the quarter
D D7 G
Where once he stood so stiff and proud and rude
G C
So let's sing our cele-bration,
Am C
It's a service to the nation
G D7 G
So poor old Adm'ral Nelson, toora loo.
G
Oh, fifty pounds of geliganite it sped him on his way
C D G
Toora, loora, loora, loora, loo
G
And the lad that laid the charge, we're in debt to him today
C D G
Toora, loora, loora, loora, loo
D
In Trafalgar Square it might be fair
D
To leave old Nelson standing there
D D7 G
But no one tells the Irish what they'll view
G C
Now the Dublin Corporation
Am C
Can stop deliberation
G D7 G
For the boys of Ireland showed them what to do
G
For a hundred_and_fifty seven years it stood up there in state
C D G
Toora, loora, loora, loora, loo
G
To mark old Nelson's victory o'er the French and Spanish fleet
C D G
Toora, loora, loora, loora, loo
D
But one thirty in the morning
D
Without a bit of warning
D D7 G
Old Nelson took a powder and he blew
G C
Now at last the Irish nation
Am C
Has Parnell in higher station
G D7 G
Than poor old Adm'ral Nelson, toora loo
G
Oh the Russians and the Yanks, with lunar probes they play
C D G
Toora, loora, loora, loora, loo
G
And I hear the French are trying hard to make up lost headway
C D G
Toora, loora, loora, loora, loo
D
But now the Irish join the race,
D
We have an astronaut in space
D D7 G
Ireland, boys, is now world power too
G C
So let's sing our celebration,
Am C
It's a service to the nation
G D7 G
So poor old Admiral Nelson, toora loo.
