Kilkelly Ireland (By Peter Jones)
[Intro basically first two lines] CAPO 5
Am 2 times
F two times
G two times
Am two times (repeat once)
[Verse 1]
Am Kilkelly, Ireland, F 18 and 60, G my dear and loving son Am John
Am Your good friend the schoolmaster F Pat McNamara's so
G good as to write these words Am down.
Your C brothers have all gone to G find work in England,
The F house is so empty and Em sad
The Am crop of potatoes is F sorely infected,
A G third to a half of them Am bad.
And C your sister Brigid and G Patrick O'Donnell
Are F going to be married in Em June.
Your Am mother says not to F work on the railroad
And G be sure to come on home Am soon.
[Verse 2]
Am Kilkelly, Ireland, F 18 and 70, G my dear and loving son Am John
Am Hello to your Mrs and F to your 4 G children,
May they grow healthy and Am strong.
C Michael has got in a G wee bit of trouble,
I F guess that he never will Em learn.
Am Because of the dampness there's F no turf to speak of
And G now we have nothing to Am burn.
And C Brigid is happy, you G named a child for her
And F now she's got six of her Em own.
You Am say you found work, but F you don't say
What kind or G when you will be coming Am home.
[Verse 3]
Am Kilkelly, Ireland, F 18 and 80, G my dear sons Michael and Am John
Am I'm sorry to give you the F very sad G news
That your dear old mother has Am gone.
We C buried her down at the G church in Kilkelly,
Your F brothers and Brigid were Em there.
Am You don't have to worry, she F died very quickly,
G Remember her in your Am prayers.
And it's C so good to hear that G Michael's returning,
With F money he's sure to buy Em land
For the Am crop has been poor and the F people
Are G selling at any price that they Am can.
[Verse 4]
Am Kilkelly, Ireland, F 18 and 90, G my dear and loving son Am John
Am I guess that I must be F close on to G eighty,
It's thirty years since you're Am gone.
C Because of all of the G money you sent me,
I'm F still living out on my Em own.
Am Michael has built him F self a fine house
And G Brigid's daughters have Am grown.
C Thank you for sending your G family picture,
They're F lovely young women and Em men.
You Am say that you might even F come for a visit,
What G joy to see you Am again.
[Verse 5]
Am Kilkelly, Ireland, F 18 and 92, G my dear brother Am John
Am I'm sorry that I F didn't write G sooner
to tell you that father passed Am on.
C He was living with Brigid, she G says he was cheerful
And F healthy right down to the Em end.
Am Ah, you should have seen him F play with
The grand G children of Pat McNamara, your Am friend.
C And we buried him G alongside of mother,
Down F at the Kilkelly church Em yard.
Am He was a strong and a F feisty old G man,
Considering his life was so Am hard.
And it's C funny the way he kept G talking about you,
He F called for you in the Em end.
Oh, Am why don't you think about F coming to visit,
We'd G all love to see you Am again.
